Jay Turner

March Speaker

March Dinner Meeting

Born in Anaheim California Jay Turner spent his formative years growing up in Newport, RI.

Fascinated by the ocean, Jay was ready to begin his studies in Oceanography at The University of Rhode Island when an opportunity presented itself. This was an opportunity that could not be passed up. Just four days after graduating high school Jay found himself on a bus heading for Cohos New York, just outside of Albany, to become the mate on a 68' motor yacht. The ``Shazam`` was a privately owned pleasure craft who's owner was making ``the trip of a lifetime``. Together with the Shazam's owner Jay would take the vessel to the highest navigable point in North America that a vessel can reach on it's own power. They would spend the summer cruising The Great Lakes and then proceed to head down The Mighty Mississippi to St. Louis, Memphis, New Orleans, and then around the pan handle of Florida and The Keys and would eventually end up spending the better part of the year cruising The Caribbean.

In 1983 Jay would ``jump ship`` and join the crew of a 46' Hatteras Sport Fish heading to Jay's hometown of Newport, RI for The America's Cup Races. Upon his return to his hometown, Jay decided to leave the yachting business behind and refocus on his studies. To make ends meet, Jay became a DJ at some of the most popular night clubs in Southern New England until, in 1989, radio came calling.

Jay's first radio gig was at WWKX-FM in Providence, RI, followed by stints at stations all over the country in just about every format. Jay has worked in great cities, like; Providence, RI, New Bedford, MA, Jacksonville, FL, Lancaster, CA, San Luis Obispo, CA, and now, at his home for nearly eighteen years, Sunny Country 102.5 FM in Santa Maria. Together with his partner Jessi, Jay co-hosts one of the most popular morning shows on the central coast; ``Jay & Jessi in the Morning``!

Jay has two beautiful children, Micheal and Sofia, and eight siblings (did we mention that he is from a Roman Catholic family from just outside of Boston? N'uff said). Jay's father, Ed ``Big Ed`` Brown was a war hero and earned two Purple Hears after survived the worst disaster in US Naval history; the sinking of The USS Indianapolis. Jay's mother was a stay at home mom (hello, NINE kids) and a wonderful homemaker. Both of his parents are now deceased but Jay is very close to his siblings and extended family.

Contact Jay via email; [email protected] or by phone at; 805-922-1041
